Troubleshooting

Fixes for the most common HintCall problems: the app cannot hear the interviewer, no answer appears, macOS permissions, sign-in, updates and the overlay window.

Checked against HintCall desktop 0.1.1 and the web app on 27 October 2026

The app cannot hear the interviewer

HintCall hears the interviewer through your computer's sound, not your microphone. Most cases are a muted meeting, sound playing on another device, or a missing permission.

  1. Run the sound check

Open ⋯ → Call prep → Sound check, play any sound (a YouTube video, or your meeting app's speaker test) and click Test meeting audio. It uses no credits.

  2. Make the sound play on this computer

Unmute the meeting and turn the volume up. Keep the meeting on the same speaker or headset you tested with.

  3. On a Mac: check the permission

In System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen & System Audio Recording, switch HintCall on. Then quit HintCall and open it again; macOS applies the permission only after a restart.

  4. On Windows: check the output device

If your default and communications output devices are different, the sound check names both. Set your meeting app's speaker to the device HintCall listens to.

Still nothing? Run ⋯ → Preferences → Help → System check and send us a screenshot of the result.

No answer appears

  • Did you press Answer? Answers appear only when you ask, with ⌘/CtrlEnter, unless Auto-answer is on.
  • Is the toolbar showing Listening? If it says Not live yet, press Go live. If listening is paused, press ⌘/CtrlShiftU.
  • Did the session stop? HintCall stops a session that hears no call audio for 2 minutes, or nothing for 5 minutes without a reply to Still in your interview?, to save your credits. Press Go live again.
  • Out of credits or daily time? The credits ring shows what is left. See Plans and credits.
  • Snap answers take longer: a few seconds, and up to 20 for a hard problem.

macOS permissions

HintCall needs Screen & System Audio Recording and Microphone. If you clicked Don't Allow during setup:

  1. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security.
  2. Switch HintCall on under Screen & System Audio Recording and under Microphone.
  3. Quit HintCall completely and open it again.

To go through setup again, use ⋯ → Preferences → Help → Replay setup.

Sign-in problems

  • Use the same sign-in method everywhere: if you signed up with Google, choose Continue with Google in the desktop app too.
  • Already signed in on hintcall.com? In the desktop app click Sign in with your browser.
  • Forgot your password? Use Forgot password? on the sign-in page to get a reset link by email.
  • No verification code? Check spam and promotions, then click Resend code.
  • Signed in on too many computers? Unlimited plans allow 1 device. Remove an old one in ⋯ → Preferences → Account → Devices.

Updates

If HintCall does not reopen within a minute after Restart, open it again from Applications (Mac) or the Start menu (Windows); the update is already installed. If the download failed, the chip reads Retry update; click it. You can also use ⋯ → Preferences → Help → Check for updates.

Window and overlay

  • The window disappeared: press ⌘/CtrlB to show it again.
  • It is in the way: move it with ⌘/CtrlArrows, or drag the HintCall name.
  • It is the wrong size: ⌘/CtrlShiftR cycles compact, default and large; ⌘/Ctrl0 resets a manual resize.
  • Text is too small: change the text size in ⋯ → Preferences → General → Reading answers.

Contact support

Open a ticket from Support in the web app, or from ⋯ → Preferences → Help → Contact support in the desktop app. Replies appear in your dashboard and by email, usually within one working day. You can also email support@hintcall.com.
