What a good STAR answer sounds like
Behavioral questions start with "Tell me about a time…". The interviewer wants evidence: a real situation, your part in it and what changed because of you. STAR keeps you from rambling.
Example: a missed requirement
Situation: a week before a release, QA found that our export feature ignored time zones. Task: I owned the export module. Action: I reproduced the bug, wrote a fix with tests for three time zones, and asked support which customers had used the export so we could check their files. Result: the release went out on time, and the two affected customers had corrected files the same day.
Common mistakes
- Saying "we" all the way through. Say "I" for your actions.
- A long situation and a one-line action.
- No result, or a vague one like "it went well".
How long should a STAR answer be?
Aim for 1 to 2 minutes when spoken, which is roughly 140 to 280 words. The builder shows your word count and an estimated speaking time at 140 words per minute.
Which part of STAR matters most?
Action. Interviewers use your answer to judge what you personally did, so spend about half the answer on your actions and keep the situation short.
What if my result has no number?
Use a before and after instead: a deadline met, a complaint that stopped, a process the team still uses. A number is best, but a concrete change is far better than "it went well".
Is anything I type saved or sent?
No. The builder runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is stored or sent to HintCall.
